Laser Therapy plays an important role in accelerating the healing process,as it frees the body’s natural ability to repair and heal itself. The effect of laser and ultrasound on bones fractures healing was studied and analyzed in this thesis. The Nd:YAG (1064 nm wavelength, 135 mW power, 16 joules energy) and diode laser (637 nm wavelength, 250 mW power) lasers and ultrasound of (1MHz frequency, 50 mW/cm2 power intensity) were used in this work. A preliminary study was performed to evaluate the attenuation coefficients for skin, muscle and bone as the laser radiation pass through such tissues and after adding ultrasound to it. The laser energy distribution in skin, muscle to reach bone is mathematically calculated as a contour shape using finite difference equations on MATLAB. Twelve mature, male, albino rats, were divided into three groups and subjected to a partial fracture on the lateral aspect of femur bone by a sharp blade. One group was illuminated by the Nd:YAG laser for two minutes while the second group treated by both Nd:YAG laser and ultrasound for two minutes also at the 1 , 2 , 3 , 6 , and 7 days after fractures. The first session was immediately after fracture occurrence. The third group of these animals was not treated and left as a control group. The preliminary study proved that the ultrasound increases the penetration of laser power through the tissue. The histological assessments of healing process results were carried on for all groups at day 28 after the fracture. The results of laser and ultrasound group showed that there is a complete healing at the site of fracture with a complete layer of periostium and a well arranged ( Word to PDF Converter - Unregistered ) Haversian system, while the result of laser group only treated showed lack of Haversian system formation. The result of control group showed incomplete healing of the bone with disfiguration and disarrangement of Haversian system. The periostium is not yet developed. These results indicate that the treatment by both laser and ultrasound are faster than the treatment with laser alone, as the treatment with both laser and ultrasound gives better results by showing a complete healing in four weeks. This improves the bone healing, and the time needed for a fracture to heal will be reduced.
