Under the auspices of the Dean of Al-Nahrain College of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Alaa Ghani Hussein, and with the presence of a number of professors and students with collaboration of Asino Pharmaceutical Company, the Paediatrics Branch held a scientific seminar about diabetes in children entitled (let us support our children against diabetes), on Monday, 23/3/2015.
The seminar discussed diabetes and its symptoms, and how to inform people about necessary awareness of diabetes, as well as how to avoid its side effects. The seminar emphasized on how to aware families about how to deal with children, especially the diabetic, if they developed hyperglycaemia or hypoglycaemia, and how to make a link between a doctor, patient, school and family to avoid any kind of risks child might be exposed to.
Many axes were discussed including definition of diabetes mellitus and its causes, symptoms and ways of diagnosis, treatment options, renal future complications, diabetic ketoacidosis in some of the diabetic, and expected problems in new born babies of diabetic mothers. This discussion was presented by:
Prof. Dr. Shatha Hussein Ali Prof. Dr. Salim Rahma Assis. Prof. Dr. AbdulKareem Muhammad Assis. Prof. Dr. Areej Abed AL-Abbas Assis. Prof. Dr. Thiya’a Kathim Khalaf
Dr. AbdulKareem Muhammad explained the essence of the disease “diabetes” and its causes. Also, he revealed some of the important facts about diabetes especially in children including: the treatment, the importance of response of children and their families, the adaptation with diabetes, and the ways of living with it.
Prof. Dr. Shatha Hussein Ali talked about the important affecting factors in controlling diabetes through diet and its influence on blood sugar levels. She also defined the most important elements of food and how to choose them considering quality of food. Whereas Assis. Prof. Dr. Areej Abed AL-Abbas presented her lecture about how to look after the affected child during his existence at school. She also discussed some important instructions to deal with the disease and the diabetic child.
Lastly, the seminar concluded with the most important recommendations including:
1. Following-up of diabetic patients at specialized clinic of diabetes at Al-Imamain Al-Kathimain (PBUT) Medical Hospital.
2. Periodical following-up of the appearance of kidneys complications through periodic urine test to figure out the presence of protein in the urine.
3. Guiding families through the primary health centres or specialized clinics
4. Adherence to a special food system for the purpose of controlling the disease and avoid complications in the future.
5. Coordination with primary health centres and conducting shared seminars.
