The Electronic Computing Center at Al-Nahrain University, in cooperation with the Iraqi National Security Service, organizes an awareness lecture on the risks of cyber blackmail and ways to prevent it. The lecture is held as part of efforts to enhance digital awareness among students and university staff and to raise awareness of the risks that users may face in cyberspace.
The lecture addresses the concept of cyber blackmail, its most common methods and techniques, and the means used by blackmailers to lure and exploit victims. It also highlights the importance of protecting privacy and avoiding sharing personal information, photos, and data with untrusted parties.
The lecturer also addresses the key indicators that may signal an attempted cyber blackmail and explains the appropriate steps to take in the event of being subjected to blackmail. Emphasis is placed on the importance of not responding to the blackmailer’s demands or yielding to their threats, as well as the need to preserve all evidence, messages, and conversations related to the blackmail and refrain from deleting them, given their importance in legal proceedings. The lecture also introduces the relevant authorities that can be contacted to file reports and complaints related to cybercrimes.
The lecture also includes a set of practical guidelines aimed at enhancing the security of personal accounts and protecting them from hacking and exploitation. These guidelines include using strong and unique passwords, enabling multi-factor authentication whenever available, and exercising caution when dealing with links, messages, and files from unknown sources.
The lecturer points out that digital awareness represents the first line of defense against various forms of cybercrime. The lecture also emphasizes the importance of reporting cases of cyber blackmail at an early stage and not hesitating to seek assistance from the relevant authorities, as well as understanding the legal and preventive measures that should be taken in such cases.
For its part, the Electronic Computing Center affirms its commitment to organizing programs and activities that contribute to promoting a culture of cybersecurity among members of the university community.
