On World Diabetes Day: Al-Nahrain University Organizes an Awareness Marathon
On Thursday, November 28, 2024, Al-Nahrain University held an awareness sports marathon in celebration of World Diabetes Day. The event took place in the university gardens in the Al-Jadriya area.
This initiative was part of the university’s efforts to raise awareness about diabetes and prevention methods. It featured participation from university staff and was organized in collaboration with the Department of Internal Medicine at the College of Medicine, with support from the Scientific Committee for Endocrinology and Diabetes Studies at the Iraqi Board of Medical Specializations, and coordination with the Student Activities Department.
The marathon witnessed enthusiastic participation, reflecting a shared commitment to health awareness and the prevention of chronic diseases. The event included brief lectures on diabetes, highlighting risk factors and strategies for living with the condition, along with health tips to promote physical activity and maintain an ideal weight.
In a statement on this occasion, the President of the University, Prof. Dr. Ali Abdulaziz Al-Shawi, emphasized that this activity underscores the university’s commitment to its social responsibility and to promoting health awareness. He highlighted the importance of exercise as a preventive measure against chronic diseases such as diabetes, stating, “Through these activities, we aim to draw attention to the importance of early detection and adopting a healthy lifestyle to reduce the risks associated with diabetes.”
The marathon concluded with participants being honored in a vibrant sporting atmosphere, reaffirming the university’s leading role in promoting health awareness and preventive concepts.
It is worth noting that this event aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG3): Good Health and Well-being, serving as an opportunity to increase awareness of diabetes’ impact on individual health and to spotlight available opportunities for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.
