Abstract:

Faecal samples were collected from 500 elementary school children, from each urban, rural of Numania district, Wasit Governorate. The children were 6 to 10 years of age. Direct Faecal smears were done from each sample with normal saline. The prevalence of infection with intestinal protozoa among the 1000 students examined was 64%. In urban area, the rate of infection was 50.6% while in rural area the rate was 77.8%. Entamoeba coli was the most common intestihal protozoa detected with a rate 30.6%, Entamoeba histolytica. Came next 27.3% and Giardia lamblia was recorded with an infection rate of 18.7%. Other non-pathogenic intestinal protozoa as lodamoeba butschlii, Trichomonas hominis, Endolimax nana and chilomastix Mesnili were found at a rate of 4.3%, 2.3%, 2.2%. and 1.9% respectively. All the intestinal protozoa detected in this study were significantly higher in rural area than in urban area. The rate of infection with single protozoa was 38.5% and that of multiple intestinal infection was 15.4%.The relations of infection with intestinal protozoa among school children examined in urban and rural areas with age, sex were discussed.
