Abstract:

Knowing the time delay between two incoming signals is of a great importance in certain applications, such as mechanical design, navigation systems, radar, sonar etc. Therefore, many researches were carried out to find an algorithm that estimates the time delay between two incoming signals. These researches gave many algorithms that vary in complexity of computations and in the necessary signal needed by the algorithm. On the other hand, the latest revolution in VLSI technology imposes some conditions on the algorithm to be integrated with this technology. One of these conditions is the simplicity of the algorithm. In this thesis, an adaptive time delay estimation based on the LMS algorithm (ATDE) was modeled by using the adaptive noise canceller algorithm (ANC) to produce a modified adaptive time delay estimation noise canceller algorithm (ATDE-NC) which has the feature of manipulating the noise effect in simplest computations and fast convergence. The developed algorithm has the property of fast convergence and the simplicity needed to make the algorithm ready for integration using VLSI technology. The forgoing properties make the proposed algorithm suitable for real time application. In this thesis, three adaptive algorithms were developed that estimate the time delay between two incoming signals without apriori information about the Statistics of incoming signals that are: (1) Adaptive time delay estimation based on cumulate (ATDC). (2) Cross-correlation based on gradient algorithm (CCBG). (3) Over determined instrumental variable method .
