Abstract:

Essential hypertension (EHT) is an important health problem in the world that is widely distributed in Iraq, and caused different percentage of mortality, so the research area in management of EHT is extended in order to obtain new agents with low cost and fewer side effects. This study was carried out in the AL-Kadhimyia Teaching Hospital from May 2006 to November 2007, (167) patients were involved in the study with the range of age between (50.3-52.4) years for both sexes (110 females and 57 males) they were complaining from essential hypertension before therapy. Patients were allocated in nineteen groups, sixteen groups had different numbers of patients but all were complaining from moderate to severe EHT and treated by various antihypertensive drugs (ramipril , amlodipine, felodipine , candesartan , valsartan and metoprolol ) which were used alone or in combination for duration of four weeks.Three medicinal plants ( Garlic, Nigella sativa and Hibiscus sabdariffa) were used in this study plus the antihypertensive drugs related to each group which was used for another four weeks of treatment. The patients related to groups 17 , 18 and 19 were complaining from mild to moderate EHT and were treated by one medicinal plant which was used alone for duration of four weeks. Measurement of arterial blood pressure , serum lipid levels (CH , TG , HDL , LDL , VLDL) and renal function (BU, Cr , UA , Na , K , Ca) was done for each group by using standard methods. Administration of antihypertensive drugs produced a significant lowering effect in arterial blood pressure levels with different effects on serum lipid profile and renal function. The antihypertensive drugs plus the medicinal plants caused more significant lowering effect in arterial blood pressure then reach to normal levels. Using garlic in therapy caused a significant reduction in serum lipid levels (CH, TG, LDL, VLDL), with elevation in serum HDL levels in some groups, this effect may be related to the synergistic action between the drugs and garlic, also there was improvement in renal function such as lowering in serum sodium levels in most groups, whereas Nigella sativa and Hibiscus sabdariffa produced no improvement in serum lipid profile and renal function levels. These medicinal plants when were used alone produced significant lowering effect in arterial blood pressure levels then reach to the normal levels. In the present study treatment by Hibiscus sabdariffa caused a more significant reduction in systolic blood pressure levels in comparison with garlic and Nigella sativa , while Hibiscus sabdariffa and Nigella sativa have an equal action and produced more significant lowering effect in diastolic blood pressure levels in comparison with garlic. In conclusion using the medicinal plants ( Garlic, Nigella sativa , Hibiscus sabdariffa ) alone or in combination with antihypertensive drugs, they were effective, safe and cheaper and recommended for essential hypertension
