Al-Nahrain University, represented by its President, Prof. Dr. Ali Abdulaziz Al-Shawi, and the Assistant President for Scientific Affairs, Prof. Dr. Omar Farouk Abdul Rashid, participated in the opening of the 46th session of the Arab Scientific Research Councils Union, hosted by the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research at the University of Baghdad.
The event witnessed broad participation from representatives of the member states of the Union. The opening session included official speeches delivered by the Secretary-General of the Arab Scientific Research Councils Union, Dr. Abdelmajid Benamara, a representative of the Association of Arab Universities, and a representative of the Arab League, in addition to a lecture addressing indicators of science, technology, and innovation in the Arab world.
The meetings focused on discussing the challenges facing Arab scientific research and developing a roadmap to enhance joint cooperation between Arab academic institutions to support innovation and sustainable development. Additionally, the Iraqi Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Naim Al-Aboudi, proposed the establishment of the “Arab Scientific Research Award” to encourage researchers and honor distinguished contributors in the scientific field.
The return of the Arab Scientific Research Councils Union to Baghdad reflects the significant role played by the Iraqi capital as a platform for revitalizing Arab scientific cooperation and strengthening paths for joint research and innovation, highlighting Iraq’s prominent scientific status among Arab nations.
Al-Nahrain University’s participation comes as part of its efforts to enhance its academic presence in Arab and international scientific forums and to collaborate with universities and research institutions to support innovation and develop scientific research in Iraq and the region.
