Abstract: In recent years, the scale of power systems has been expanding and with that expansion stable power supply and smooth power system operation is becoming increasingly important. One measure for increasing stability is to improve the main circuits by raising the voltage or employing series capacitors in power transmission lines, but the generator exciter control method, which makes use of AVR (automatic voltage regulator), is attracting attention because of its inherent cost advantage. Different types of AVR are available due to the variety in its two major components, the measuring unit and the regulating unit. One of the principal control systems that affect the synchronous generator operation and performance is the exciter control system that represents the main component in the AVR loop. Our work is focus on implementing a simulation system for the operation of AVR of single machine connected to infinite bus using FPGA. We chose the excitation system type II for its popularity which is one of the most commonly standard set of mathematical models adapted type. They were developed to meet the requirement of using the computer to study and analyze the excitation systems. Terminal voltage (vt), the electrical torque (Te) and the load angle (ä) are the key parameters for the proposed system that had been analyzed first by the block diagram reduction to get their transfer function each one alone regardless of the others. The complex transfer functions were simplified and transformed to the z-domain by the using a special mathematical software (Maple). Key parameters behavior were monitored, studied, and compared to those obtained from Matlab after implemented them on FPGA using Xilinix software that specialized with its families and environments because it is the most easy to use and available.
