Abstract:

Hospital records of all deaths due to maternity cases were surveyed for the period from first of January, 1983, to thirty-first of December, 1992. The total sample size is (5$) cases of death. The study of 59 cases of death revealed the following: 1. Age: Distribution of age group was among women aged 21-35 [67.8%]. 2. Gravida and Parity: Maternal death reaches maximum at gravida 5+ and para 2-4. 3. Education: Highest percentage was for those with primary school education [59.3%]. 4. Occupation: Most women who died were house-wives [48.8%]. 5. Urban-Rural Differences: Maximum distribution is in urban areas [67.78%], while rural areas [32.2%]. 6. Distribution of Antenatal Care: Women who had no antenatal care consist the highest percentage [47.4%]. 7. Causes of Death: Post-Partum Haemorrhage/ constitute the highest percentage [33.8%] 8. Maternal Mortality Rate: Maternal morality rate had declined over the first eight years of the study, from 1983 [101.85/100,000] to 1990 [17.66/100,000], And had increased again during the last two years of the study, 1991 [46.86], and 1992 [37.58]. Lastly we can say that maternal mortality still constitute an important public health problem due to it's specificity.
