Abstract:

In local and regional cancer of the breast, certain clinical and pathological variables have important prognostic value in terms of overall anu and metastatic free survival. This is a study that included 1257 breast cancer cases from both sexes and four cases of...benign breast lesions, that were attending the University hospital of Saddam" college of medicine and the private laboratory of Dr. Al-Hadithi from June 1988 to August 1999. Those cases were followed retrospectively and various clinicopathological variables had been correlated. There were 1244 (98.96%) female patients and 13 (1.03%) male patients with an overall mean age of (44.6 years) with the highest mean age observed in cases of medullary carcinoma (48.6 years) and the lowest was in cases of cystosarcoma phylloides (34.75 years). Patients age was directly proportional to tumor grade in all histological types. Regarding histological type, ductal carcinoma was the commonest histological type (72.57%) with lobular carcinoma coming next (22.36%). The overall tumor mean size was (4.48cm) with the largest mean size observed in cases of cystosarcoma phylloides (6.5cm), and there was an increase in tumor size directly proportional to an increase in tumor grade. Reactivity to monoclonal antibody CA15-3 was studied; a strong cytoplasmic immunoreactivity had been encountered in (84.6%) of cases with IDC, and a moderate mixed apical and cytoplasmic reactivity in (80%) of cases with DCIS. Also it showed a moderately positive immunoreaction of apical pattern in two cases of fibroadenoma and two cases of fibrocystic disease
