Abstract:

From a public health point of view gonococcal ophthalmia neonatorum(GCON) is important as it can rapidly lead to. Blindness The frequency of(GCON)is determined by the prevalence of maternal gonococcal infection In most industrialize countres the prevalence of gonorrhoea in pregnant women is less than -1%• In developing-.coutries the rate are between 3%-15% espicialy in Afria. The rate of transmission from ti mother to the newborn is between 30%_50% This study include the examination of 500 vaginal swab taken from pregnant women befor deli vary and 499 swab from cojunctival sac from their infant after delivary.(one of the infant, die during delivary) to calculate the prevalence of (GC) in pregnant women and the incidence of (0.N) in the infant from infected mother. The swab cultured in chocleat_blood_and mockoncy agar media immediatly and incubate in 35 c for 48 hour with concentration of 002 5_10% . We find that from' 500 vaginal swab 7 are positive inflamation this maen that the prevalence of maternal gonococcal infection is 1.4%. From the conjunctival swab (499) 2 of these culture are positive born from infected mother . This mean that the incidence of (O.N) born from infected mother nearly 0.4% This study done in KERBALA (IRAQ) only.
