Abstract:

A total of 1858 stool specimens were collected from, the primary school children in Kerbala (urban and rural) of both sexes and aged 6-15 years.Two smears were prepared from each specimen,one in normal saline and one in iodine solution and examined for intestinal parasites.The prevalence rate of intestinal parasitic infection.was found to be 21.1%.The prevalence of infection was significantly higher in rural (23.5%)than in urban students (1.8..6%). No significant sex or age differences in the distribution of infection were detected.The prevalence of intestinal parasitic infection among children with large family size.(six members and over) was found to be significantly higher than that among children with small family size. (3-5 members). Single infection was found in 95.2%of the infected children and multiple infectionin the rest (4.8%).Giardia lamblia was the leading parasite detected with a prevalence rate of (9.9%) followed by Entamoeba histolytica 3.5%),Trichuris trichiura (2.9%), Entamoeba coli (2.0%), Hymenolepis nana (1..9%), Enterobius vermicularis (1.1%), Ascaris lum.bricoides (0.5%), Iodam.oeba butschlii(0.2%), Ancylostoma duodenale (0.05%) and Trichomonas hominis (0.05%) respectively.
