Abstract:

Optical absorption spectra of Nd3"r-doped borate, silicate and borophosphate glasses have been analyzed using the Judd-Ofelt (J-O) model of crystal field induced electric dipole transitions. The (J-O) model has been used for the calculation of spectroscopic parameters pertaining to different types of Nd3+:Glass laser media samples.Six Nd3+:Glass samples with three types of hosts namely: Borate with doping 2%, 3%,. 5%, and 6%, Silicate with doping 2%, and Borophosphate with doping 2% were studied. The absolute absorption intensity has been measured for the samples above, and used to determine the three intensity parameters (Q2, H4, and Q6) for each sample, these intensity parameters were used to evaluate the line strengths (S) for excited state absorption from the metastable F32 level. The absorption and emission transition probabilities (A) were calculated for these samples and the results were compared with the published data. Emission intensities for 4F32_4IJ transition have been calculated, together with 4F32 radiative lifetime (t) and fluorescence branching ratios (B).Variations of these parameters with glass composition and their implications on tailoring the spectroscopic properties with glass composition have been studied. The effect of Nd3+ concentration on the spectroscopic parameters has been studied and it has been found that they increase directly with this concentration. This study has revealed that the spectroscopic parameters increase directly with doping concentration between 2% and 5% for the borate host, whereas the borophosphate host gave the best spectroscopic parameters among the studied hosts.
