Abstract:

Different extracts of dried flower of Calendula officinalis were tested for their in-vitro and in-vivo anti-microbial activity. These extracts include Saponins, volatile oil, hexane extract, ethyl acetate extract and methanolic extract. Microorganisms included in these test were Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton tonsurans. Chemical investigation on these extracts showed that Calendula officinalis contains different active compounds such as flavonoids, glycosides, saponins, volatile oils and steroids. The invitro tests showed that the best extract of Calendula officinalis with highest antibacterial and anti-fungal activity was hexane followed by the methanolic extract and finally the ethyl acetate extract. Essential oils obtained by hydro-distillation were highly effective against bacteria and fungal growth. Extracted saponins from Calendula offlcinalis have no activity against bacteria and fungal growth. The invivo test showed that hexane extract C. officinalis showed a good antibacterial and anti-fungal activity.
