Abstract:

This investigation was planned to study the histopathological changes caused by dcrmatophytes and study the therapeutic activity of Teucrium polium (hexanc extract) on the infected skin by using light and electron microscope. The result were summarized as follow: Out of 56 specimens were collected from the groins, nails, feet and beard skin of infected patients with derma top hytes, only 35 specimens gave positive results when grown on the mycological culture media. The identification of these isolates showed that they belong to four species which were: Trichophyton rubriim, Trichophyton verrucosum, Trichophyton tonsurans and Epidermophyton floccosum. Three species were selected in our experimental work which were: Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton verrucosum and Epidermatophyton floccosum. Light and electron microscopic studies had shown certain degenerative changes, these changes were represented by degeneration of stratum corneum, stratum spinosum and stratum germinativm of epidermis layer, with blood vessels hemorrhage in the dermis layer. Light and electron microscopic studies reveled certain regenerative changes in the infected area after the treatment with Teucrium polium extract, these changes were represented by slight hypcrplasia of the pre-incisional epithelium with the accumulation of lymphocytes and neutrophils in the stratum spinosum and stratum germinativm of epidermis layer. The fibroblast in the dermis layer associated with the an increase in the deposition of collagen fibers. The same regenerative changes were seen in the infected area that was treated with Whitefield ointment. These changes were represented by new epithelial cells extended in the subcutaneous fat of the entire length of the incision, but the collagen fibers were less than those found in the skin of animal treated with Teucrium polium extract. The period required for the treatment with Teucrium polium extract was less than that required for Whitefield ointment which was 17: 21 days respectively.
