Abstract:

Trends in personal performance have been difficult to assess , "but they are not very encouraging. There are clear disparities in health worker density ( geographical distribution ) "between urban and rural areas of developing countries and these may even have increased in recent decades, such experience promp­ted ashift in health manpower strategies of many developing countries to concentrate on the training of middle-level health personnel and to use health workers at the community level in order to achieve universal coverage. Community satisfaction with aspects of health and nursing care as availability and accessibility of services and the extent to which nurses commu­nicate , both information and concern is considered avalid indicater of the quality of nursing care and attitude of popu­lation toward nursing profession. Mean while , the level of staff1s satisfaction at work place v/ill affect the level of their performance at various degree. For this purpose Diala Governorate was chosen for assessment of the situation of nursing profession as an objective of this study. The results revealed anegative attitude of community toward nursing profession in 82% for the families in urban areas while it was 33% in rural areas. On the other hand , the study showed that the families in "both rural and urban areas were found to be 100% reluctant toward working of their girls in nursing which considered an important reason for reluctant of girlo to present in nursing school. Generally , the student in interme­diate schools were reflected a high percentage of reluctant toward nursing profession in both areas due to their lack of interest and family discouragement. Nursing staff Job satis­faction was 52.14% , they had least MPS of satisfaction about promotion and motivation in profession in 33.8% while they were highly motivated for training. Nursing manpower revealed evident shortage in general. Recommendation have been suggested to be implemented to create changes and improvements in the curriculum of intermediate schools to orient the girles about nursing profession. There is urgent need to improve the general working conditions of nurses in health institution and continuing ediication was emphasized. Financial and status rewards are very necessary to the nursing manpower so as for other incentires.
