Abstract : Smart cards have experienced tremendous growth in the past few years. These small, colorful plastic cards with their semiconductor chips continue to spread throughout the world. Smart card technology can enable an organization to become more secure, efficient, and interoperable while delivering strong authentication, security, identity management, data management, customer support, and communications. This thesis aims to design and implement a software simulation for smart card communication called Smart Card Simulator (SCS), in order to cover the theoretical and educational concepts of how these cards work and to allow monitor and review the entire sequence of commands that have been sent to a smart card along with the responses of the card to these commands. SCS offers a wide variety of possibilities to learn and work with smart card. It can be used to understand and to learn the principles of smart card operation and test various smart card applications. It offers monitoring a complete record of the traffic between the card and the host. The programming language Visual Basic 6.0 was chosen to build the SCS as it offers the ability to build a Graphical User Interface and variety of other useful functions.
