Abstract:

Laser beam cutting has received an increasing attention for a wide variety of applications in industries due to its excellent cut quality with high productivity and flexibility. The laser cutting system is designed in this thesis; the system can cut various thin materials such as metals. A moving workpiece is used where the laser source and the mirror are fixed. Different designs are done, and then the smallest spot size obtained to be (0.26mm). In order to applying the intelligent control technology to the laser beam delivery system in order to control the spot size of the laser falling on the workpiece, a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) is designed to control the D.C. motor performance which is used to adjust the focal point of the cutting system. Conventional PI controller is used to find the rule base for FLC which is Mamdani type with twenty five rules. The software used is ZEMAX in the design of beam delivery system and MATLAB 7 for designing the conventional PI and FLC controllers. The performance of the controllers that have been tested shows that FLC is better than conventional PI controller because it is faster with zero steady state error which enables the system D.C. motor to control the movement of the nozzle in higher precision.
