Abstract:

An experimental proximity fuze system has been designed and constructed. This system consists of a laser transmitter and receiver. The transmitter consists of He-Ne of 1 mW power. The receiver consists of collimating lens to focus the laser rays, which are reflected from the target onto the astigmatic lens, to form the shape of the incident laser spot on a quadrant detector, which was manufactured from solar cells to detect the reflected signal from the target. The quadrant detector is connected to a four line electronic amplifying circuit, each line is connected to one quarter of the detector and is feeding an LED to indicate laser beam incidence on that quarter. The principle of this system depends on a different concept in sensing the target. The parallel rays, which are transmitted through astigmatic lens, are focused on a circular spot in the focal plane, and deformed radically (as elliptical shape) whenever they lie in the focal plane, depending on the results of astigmatism phenomenon in lenses, which has been used in the present design to sense that the target is within the range of the focal length. An experimental arrangement of proximity fuze has been designed and built to evaluate the performance of such type of fuzes. The error incurred in determining the target distance was within 10% of focal length of the astigmatic lens.
