In the present research, synthesis of copolymers containing fluorescence chromophores, in particular naphthalene groups were discussed. The synthesis includes the copolymerization of methacrylic acid or methyl acrylate with 3-(1-naphthyl) acrylic acid using benzoyl peroxide initiator as in the following brief description: 1) Synthesis of three types of copolymers by bulk addition polymerization under N2 atmosphere. - Copolymer of methacrylic acid and 3-(1-naphthyl) acrylic acid.Scheme (I).- Copolymer of methyl acrylate and 3-(1-naphthyl) acrylic acid.Scheme(I). - Tricopolymer of methacrylic acid, methyl acrylate and 3-(1-naphthyl) acrylic acid. Attempts to synthesize the tricopolymer were unsuccessful. Scheme (II). The polymers were identified by 1H-N.M.R., C13 N.M.R., U.V. spectra and steady-state fluorescence, the results show the copolymerization of 3-(1-naphthyl) acrylic acid with both monomers (methacrylic acid and methyl acrylate). The conformation and the behavior of these copolymers in solutions were investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy. 2) Synthesis of methacrylic acid and 3-(1-naphthyl) acrylic acid copolymer by solution polymerization process using toluene as a solvent under N2 atmosphere.Scheme (I). The copolymer was characterized by U.V. spectrum and steady-state fluorescence which confirm the copolymerization process.
