Al-Nahrain Center for Renewable Energy Research at Al-Nahrain University has been inserted in the ALECSO list of Arab Centers of Excellence in the field of renewable energy for the period 2025–2026, in a scientific achievement regarded as a significant milestone at both the Iraqi and Arab levels. This list represents the first specialized Arab initiative in the field of renewable energy, as the centers included contribute to supporting applied scientific research, achieving sustainable development goals, and enhancing the transition toward clean and renewable energy.
The insertion of the Center coincided with the launch ceremony of the Arab Guide for Solar and Wind Energy Fields, prepared by a select group of specialists in the field of renewable energy. The event is organized by the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) and hosted by Hamad Bin Khalifa University in the State of Qatar on 11–12 December 2025. The ceremony witnesses the presentation of a commemorative shield and a certificate of inclusion to Assistant Professor Dr. Hussein Thamer Salloum, Director of Al-Nahrain Center for Renewable Energy Research, in the presence of the Director-General of ALECSO and a number of its officials.
Six Arab research centers are selected to join the list following a competition that includes 35 research centers from 13 Arab countries, among them five research centers from Iraq. This selection is considered the result of Al-Nahrain University’s efforts to enhance Arab communication and integration among scientific institutions. It also reflects ALECSO’s confidence in Iraqi research capabilities and its appreciation of the distinguished efforts made in supporting the energy transition and expanding the horizons of joint Arab cooperation in the fields of innovation and modern technologies.
The event also includs scientific sessions with the participation of heads and directors of the Arab centers listed by ALECSO, during which prospects for Arab cooperation for the year 2026 are discussed, particularly in the areas of implementing joint research projects, exchanging expertise, strengthening Arab research capacities, and developing a roadmap for the implementation of ALECSO initiatives in the fields of clean energy and the environment.
