Abstract:

The analysis and design of current-mode digital circuits working with continues and constant current drawn from power supply have been done in this work. The current mode inverter gate is one of the basic element for any current mode digital circuit. A complete design for proposed current mode inverter at the transistor level using enhancement mode MOSFET transistors has been developed. The threshold voltage of the MOSFET transistors used in the design was carefully selected in a way to ensure the proper operation of the current mode inverter gate. The other types of current-mode gates such as AND, OR, NAND, NOR, were build based on the basic current-mode inverter gate. The logical levels in terms of currents for all designed digital gates and circuits were calculated to be 90 μA for logic "1" and 0 μA for logic '0'. A design for different types of digital circuits using current-mode approach has been done. Based on the designed current-mode gates, various digital circuits such as decoder, encoder, priority encoder, multiplexer and demultiplexer has been designed. Furthermore, a comparison for these circuits in both current and voltage modes was made to illustrate the benefit of using the current-mode approach in the design of circuits. For the simplicity purpose of the resultant digital circuits, a new type of current gates called Anti-inverter was suggested and a design example (one-bit adder and 4-bit 32-function ALU) using this gate was made. The design examples show that the number of transistors per circuit is efficiently reduced. The analysis of current-mode digital circuits was carried out using the well-known simulation program PSpice. The newer version ofPSpiceisa part of a complete set of an electronic design tool called OrCAD version 9.1.
