AL-Nahrain College of Medicine organizes a symposium about antibiotic- resistant bacteria

The Microbiology Branch/College of Medicine at Al-Nahrain University organized a scientific symposium about antibiotic- resistant bacteria with the participation of Al-Imamain Al –kathimain (PBUT) Medical City and a number of specialists in this field.
The purpose of the symposium was to introduce the importance and danger of antibiotic- resistant bacteria, which is considered as the main cause of many infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, pneumonia, diarrhea and contamination of wounds and burns.
The symposium included four axes; the first one focused on the definition of antibiotic- resistant bacteria and the basis of such resistance. The second axis touched on the results of excessive misuse of drugs without prescriptions .The third axis demonstrated the bacteria that is resistant to antibiotics such as sensitivity tests for use to kill pathogenic bacteria, as well as molecular tests using (PCR) device. The fourth axis investigated modern rapid techniques for diagnosis using (VITEK) device. The symposium recommended the need to perform antibiotics sensitivity tests before using them and instructed to develop a plan for the use of antibiotics by the Ministry of Health. It also emphasized on public and personal hygiene, hand washing to prevent the spread of bacteria especially in hospitals and health centers ,the use of modern techniques such as polymerase chain reaction technique (PCR) to investigate resistant bacteria, especially infectious diseases such as pulmonary tuberculosis, pneumonia and diarrhea, and the use of rapid tests to check the sensitivity such as (VITEK) test in order to get quick results and prescription of the patient's treatment and the use of certain biological products such as probiotics for the purpose of restoring natural bacteria that have a role in the resistance to pathogenic bacteria with multiple resistance to antibiotics.
